I was sitting in bed, just getting ready to go to sleep when my girlfriend got up from her computer, said she’d be right back, and went out into the hallway. A couple minutes later, she walked back in and whispered that she had to show me something, so I pulled my boxers back on, unable to shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Still, I took her hand and she led me into the dark hall, pulling me into the bathroom. As my eyes adjusted to the dim light, I saw her body there on the bathroom floor.

Today is the eleventh of November, a day that celebrates the sacrifices made by those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is Veterans Day. On this day, I would like to express my gratitude to my family and friends, both current and former military. I would like to thank all those who have served, because it is a sacrifice. I would like to thank the family members and friends of our veterans as well. Please do not think of me as ungrateful.

But I would like to say something more. I would like to share a wish, a prayer, a dream. It’s something that I feel every Veterans Day. I would like to see a future where we don’t have to thank living veterans, and the years in which the dead fell are further and further from us. Not out of spite or malice, but out of a desire for an end to war. I long for the day when our military forces are no longer necessary, for a Veterans Day celebration that doesn’t require us to thank our loved ones via Skype or phone. I hope for a future when we can thank all those who sacrificed time, family, and life so that no more must ever sacrifice the same. I don’t want to forget the veterans who have come before, or those who are yet to serve. Your service to your country should never be forgotten. I only wish that we had less need of you. I wish there were no cause that required you to give up what you do. I dream of peace. I’ll do my part to make it a reality.

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
—John F. Kennedy

Thank you.

“A Dream”

I dreamed of a night too hot to sleep,
So I wandered under the light of stars
And a moon that smiled like you did
On another night so long ago, my bare
Feet touching nothing but cool grass,
Gently tickling my soles until I smiled
Too.

I dreamed that I walked for many miles,
Until I reached the shaded edge of a
Forest of towering, trembling oaks, and
I saw there, standing alone at the verge,
You, clad in such blue that the skies
And seas wept jealous tears at seeing
You.

I dreamed you glided across the grass,
And reached out your hand to lead me
Down the secret paths to forest’s heart.
We found a clearing, bathed in starlight,
And fell down together there, and for a
Night, a brief night, the world was only
Us.

“And So Begins The Long Night”

And so begins the long night, for though the sun
May rise and set a thousand times, until I hear
Your voice again, whispering into my ear, the
Morning will not return.

And so begins the long night, when I find I am
Alone, lost in the darkness and so uncertain
Of which way I need to go without your hand
Reaching out for mine.

And so begins the long night, and I am now
Unable to sleep, despite the silence that
Has fallen, and I pray that I might dream of
You, and find some comfort there.

“Do you still dream?”

“I thought that I was dreaming now.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I suppose I do.”

“Do dream, or do know?”

“Either.”

“What do you dream about?”

“When I remember?”

“Yeah, when you remember.”

“Do you want me to be honest, or do you want me to tell you what I think you want to hear?”

“Both.”

“I dream about you.”

“Really?”

“Really. Not like sex or anything. We’re just together. Spending time with each other.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah. I had a dream about a week ago with you. We spent an afternoon just lying on our backs in a field.”

“That sounds really nice.”

“Yeah, sunshine and everything. It was beautiful.”

“Sounds like it.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

“Do you still dream?”

“No.”

“Not at all?”

“As rarely as possible.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I mean I really don’t like thinking about you all that much anymore.”

“…”

“No, I…not that…”

“Then what?”

“I just…it hurts too much to think about you anymore.”

“I guess that makes sense.”

“Yeah…I mean, it was good and all.”

“You don’t have to say that. I should be apologizing.”

“Yeah, you probably should, but I don’t expect you to.”

“Ouch.”

“Well, I mean, I’m just trying to be honest with you.”

“I know.”

“Eternity”

For the briefest of eternities,
I am lost in dream, open meadows
The likes of which I’ve never known
In the Waking lie before me, green
And lush and full of new lives.
But I blink into wakefulness
And the dream is gone, naught but
A fleeting memory captured
In a poem.
